A Rising Star in Surgical Research
Kimberly J. Riehle, MD, FACS, is a pediatric surgeon at Seattle Children’s Hospital, Seattle, Washington. Her current research is focused on liver cancer in children and why otherwise healthy children and young adults have developed a deadly form of it.
A rising star in surgical research, she is quick to credit the American College of Surgeons Foundation for helping in her success. In a letter to ACS, Dr. Riehle expressed her appreciation for two ACS scholarships that helped set her on her research career path. She also recently won a prestigious National Institutes of Health grant. She is grateful for the ACS Foundation’s support, which has emboldened her research into childhood liver cancer.
“While liver tumors are rare in children, effective nonsurgical treatments are few and far between. My research efforts are aimed at understanding how liver cancer develops in healthy children, and to develop cures for these patients. As a physician and a mom, I particularly enjoy helping children and their families get through tough situations, and appreciate the uniqueness of each child on whom I perform an operation,” Dr. Riehle explains.
Dr. Riehle’s ACS awards helped give her entry into medical research for better treatment of the disease, and her career as a surgeon embodies her values as an ACS Fellow, providing the very best direct care for her patients. She even takes the time to cut the surgical bandages into fun shapes—like a flower or heart—to help make her young patients smile after surgery.
With continued philanthropic support, the American College of Surgeons Foundation will be able to provide award funding for other surgical researchers in their pursuit of medical advancements that save lives and promote optimal patient care. Through support of surgeons like Dr. Riehle, ACS Foundation donors have made a meaningful impact for the profession and surgical patients.
