On Friday, June 27, Iowa and Midwest health care leaders convened for the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Surgical Health Care Quality Forum Iowa to discuss the unique health care issues that rural areas face today.

The goal of the ACS Foundation is to promote voluntary philanthropy from Fellows and friends to support the College's goals for improving surgical patient care and ensuring the professional standing of surgeons wherever they practice.

When making an outright or legacy gift to the ACS Foundation, you may give to the Sustaining Fund, which is directed as needed by the College to benefit the future of the surgical profession by funding education and research. The purpose of this unrestricted fund is to ensure stability and advancement of the College's mission and provide a source of internal capital for College priorities. But if you prefer, you may also designate your gift to a specific ACS fund, such as the newly established Codman Quality and Safety Fund.

In recognition of the pioneering work of Ernest A. Codman, MD, FACS, in patient-centered, quality-based surgery, the Codman Fund will support development of quality measurement tools and inspire quality improvement. For example, ACS best practices guidelines serve as complete yet concise resources for health care providers and quality improvement professionals. New guidelines will provide evidence-based, expert panel-rated lists of interventions that aim to help reduce morbidity and mortality rates in areas including traumatic brain injury, breast cancer and bariatric surgery.

However you choose to make your legacy on College programs, rest assured that it will be used wisely for the benefit of the surgical profession and patients. If you have any questions, the ACS Foundation staff is ready to assist you.
